Walking

He's doing it! Micah is taking 3-5 steps these days. Yeah!

Ever since his first birthday Micah has been trying to walk. It's been a big hurdle. He knows what to do, but his balance and strength have needed some work.

Because of his low tone, his ankles are REALLY flexible. His toes can flip back and touch his shin. In order to keep himself upright and take a step, he needs stronger muscles than most kids.

For the past 2-3 months he has taken one or two steps, by himself, and then would fall backwards. (He had the wrong size shoes for a while, so that hindered his progress). But in the past few days we've seen lots of improvement. At 16 months this is right at the edge of typical development.

It's so cute to see him walk. He finds great accomplishment in this feat! He is so proud of himself!

On a side note: Last weekend we were at the Children's museum and saw another 2+ year old DS boy who was walking. He has is own method of movement. He walked for 5-6 steps, then crawled, then bear crawled, then walked. It worked for him! We've been waiting for Micah to reach this milestone of walking. I thought we would celebrate when he just walking (done with crawling) and walking 5-10 feet at a time. Seeing others, helped me to celebrate Micah's method's of movement and to celebrate the milestones when they happen, and not have unrealistic expectations.
