Today is Down Syndrome awareness day. It's a big day for the Down Syndrome community. One community that I am happy to be a part of. I wouldn't say that I've been strongly involved in this group. But I'm thankful for those in my support group, and to the wider group of people offer advice, listen and share stories of achievement, loss and joys and support. We still have much to learn about this extra chromosome and I pray that by raising awareness of Down Syndrome that more families will come to accept our unique family and together we can work to get research funded and laws passed for these kids and adults.
There is a needed laws (ABLE Act - Achieving Better Life Experience) ABLE Act in process with congress, but there isn't enough support to bring it to a vote. Medical research has not improved over the years because of lack of funding and government support. There is growing concern that there will be lack of support for kids and adults with disabilities in the years to come, because of the increases in genetic testing.
All of these factors make awareness of the Down Syndrome an important matter. Thanks for caring about our family and all the families around the world just like ours.
