Development Evaluation

This past week Micah had a PT (physical therapy) evaluation to see if he could benefit from some additional therapy to help him learn. We continue to hear from people that they are amazed at his progress, however we hadn't had much PT over the summer and we thought he was developing some bad habits. So we went ahead with an evaluation just to see.

The therapist evaluated him on the Bayley scale and determined that his large motor skills (sitting, crawling, standing) are equivalent to an 8 month old's typical development. His fine motor skills (picking up objects, playing with toys, grasping things) are equivalent to a 4 month old's typical development. So that puts him the 4th percentile of development for 9 month old children.

At first this information could seem daunting, being 4 out of a 100 means there's a lot of work to be done. But rather than be concerned about this, we are content and hopeful. Hopeful that we will see miracles happen in this little boys life. And that he will beat the odds again and again. The therapist said, "he is doing amazingly well and I believe that he doesn't need additional therapy." She expects that he will figure out these basic skills on his own. This was good news to hear!

The norm is that DS kids are 15+ months behind typical kids...but from what we see, Micah is NOT going to be the normal DS kid. He's working hard at keeping up with kids his own age and loves playing with his big brother Kyle.
