Ears & Hearing

Micah is now 9 months old. Early in August he had tubes placed in his ears. He has smaller than normal ear canals and often has fluid in and around the ear drum. This makes it harder to hear and could delay his development even further if went untreated. We've had this same problem with Kyle and have noticed that his speech is delayed. The surgery went well and his ears are clear of fluid at at this point and has no additional infections. Yeah!

However, we have not received definite results from his hearing tests. When Micah was first born he passed his hearing exam, but since then the results have been inconclusive. We were hoping that we would get good and positive results after the tubes were placed. This is not the case. Therefore in a few weeks we have another test scheduled to accurately determine what is happening with his hearing.

Micah will be sedated and the audiologist will do an auditory brain stem response test. They will attach electrodes to his head and record electrical activity of the auditory nerve. We've known for a while that most Down Syndrome kids experience some kind of hearing loss, which makes communication that much more difficult. Once we get the test results we will know the next steps to take. We also know that most DS kids benefit from sign language, so we've started signing with him in hopes of helping him communicate.
